How do I connect to a modem using USB?

How to Connect to Modem Using USB

  • Step 1. Connect the cable coax line that is dedicated to the cable modem to the cable connector on the modem.
  • Step 2. Once the cable coax line has been connected to the cable modem, plug one end of the USB cable into the USB port on the cable modem.
  • Step 3. Once the USB Cable Modem has been connected to the modem connect the other end to the computer's USB port, which may be found on either the front or back of the computer. Note: If the cable modem has both USB and Ethernet connectors, only use one or the other - not both. Note: Use the USB cable supplied with the modem or check the manufacturer's specifications for the appropriate type.
  • Step 4. Once the USB Cable Modem has been connected to the cable modem plug the power transformer into a surge protector.
  • Step 5. Once the power transformer has been connected a surge protector, connect the power transformer into the modems power connector.
  • Step 6.Once the power transformer has been connected to the modem's power connector,  connect the power for the computer following the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Step 7.Once the computer's power has been connected, plug the surge protector into a grounded 110 VAC household outlet. After the surge protector has been connected, a light indicating that the cable modem is "on" should light up. Most cable modems are "on" all the time and do not have a switch. If the cable modem has a power switch turn on the modem. After switching the modem on, wait for it to "synch" with the system. This may take several minutes. A modem light will indicate when synchronization occurs. External cable modems have front panel indicator lights that show the status of the cable Internet connection. The exact labels for these lights will vary between manufacturers, but they all have lights that indicate similar information. Refer to the user manual that came with the cable modem for details.
