How to Connect to Modem Using Ethernet

Before installation, make sure all the necessary parts to establish your connection are on hand, including an Ethernet Card in the computer, an Ethernet cable, modem, coaxial cable, surge protector, and a power outlet.

  • Step 1. Connect the cable coax that is dedicated to the cable modem to the cable connector on the back of the modem.  Make sure the other end is connected securely to the wall.
  • Step 2. Once the cable coax line has been connected to the cable modem, plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port of the Ethernet card on the back of the computer. Note: If the cable modem has both USB and Ethernet connectors, only use one or the other - not both.
  • Step 3. Once the Ethernet cable has been plugged into the Ethernet card, connect the other end to the Ethernet jack on the back of the cable modem. Note: Use the Ethernet cable supplied with the modem or check the manufacturer's specifications for the appropriate type.
  • Step 4. Once the Ethernet cable has been connected to the cable modem, plug the power cable for the modem into a surge protector. Once the power cable has been connected a surge protector, connect the other end into the back of the cable modem.
  • Step 5. Once the power cable has been connected to the modem, connect the power for the computer following the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Step 6. Once the computer's power has been connected, plug the surge protector into a grounded 110VAC household outlet. After the surge protector has been connected, a light indicating that the cable modem is "on" should light up. Most cable modems are "on" all the time and do not have a switch. If the cable modem has a power switch turn on the modem. After switching the modem on, wait for it to "synch" with the system. This may take several minutes. A modem light will indicate when synchronization occurs. External cable modems have front panel indicator lights that show the status of the cable Internet connection. The exact labels for these lights will vary between manufacturers, but all  the modems have lights that indicate similar information. Refer to the user manual that came with the cable modem for details.
  • Step 7. Once the modem has finished "synching", turn on the computer. It should automatically detect the modem and connect. Now the PC should be able to get online.
