Physical installation of an Ethernet card

Network Card Installation Instructions for a Windows Computer

Install the Network Card (Ethernet adapter)

  1. Turn off the computer and unplug and remove all cords attached.

  2. If the computer is a laptop with a PC card Ethernet adapter, skip ahead to number 8. If the computer is not a laptop, remove the computer case (see figure 1&2).

  3. Before inserting the Ethernet adapter, it's a good idea for the user to ground himself or herself by touching an unpainted metal surface somewhere on the computer. (See figure 3). This is a precautionary measure to prevent static electricity from harming the electronics inside the computer.

  4. Locate an available PCI or ISA slot for the Ethernet adapter and insert the adapter into the appropriate slot. Most computers have both PCI and ISA slots.  PCI slots (see figure 4) are shorter and usually lighter in color than ISA slots (see figure 5). Do NOT attempt to insert a PCI adapter into an ISA slot or an ISA adapter into a PCI slot. If not sure where to insert the adapter, call a local PC Technician or manufacturer.

  5. Once an open slot has been located, remove the slot cover (see figure 6) and install the adapter card (see figure 7&8).

  6. Ensure the Ethernet adapter is completely plugged into the slot and secure it with the screw removed with the slot cover. Then replace the computer case.

  7. Re-attach all cords and turn on the computer. As the PC starts, it should recognize that an Ethernet adapter has been added and copy network drivers to the appropriate location with the disk provided from the manufacturer.

  8. To install a Ethernet adapter in a lap top turn on the computer. Slide the Ethernet adapter into an available PCMCIA slot and install the drivers provided from the manufacturer as per the instructions on the screen.
